Black Fortress Black Fortress: Built in 1834, it is one of the famous monuments of Gyumri. The fortress is a complex of military and architectural buildings. In the central part is the Alexandrapol Fortress with 3 gates, in the center is the Church of St. Alexandra The plan of the church and the southern and northern fortresses that formed the general defensive complex of Alexandrapol. Underground passages were built for the Black Fortress and there were roads from the fortress to the current Mother Armenia monument and the Red Fortress. Among the architectural monuments of Zangezur, the Tatev Monastery has no equal. It was the richest monastic complex of medieval Armenia. In addition to being a spiritual center, Tatev was also an important political stronghold of the Syunik Kingdom. The strategically advantageous location and inaccessibility of the monastery created favorable conditions here to create strong defensive structures.
